The biomethanation principle. - Players.
The degradation of organic matter, by means of the combined action of several communities of micro-organisms, in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic digestion) and sheltered from light.
This technique produces a gaseous mixture known as biogas. This mixture consists of methane (CH4), which is the main gas, and a digested product, which is recycled and used as soil improver.
A biomethanation Facilitator for the Wallonia region.
Since October 2001, IRCO Studies Bureau has been the designated biomethanation Facilitator across the Wallonia region. The Bureau operates mostly on a local level and its main objective is to promote the emergence of biomethanation plants for energy recycling projects using moist biomass from a diverse range of sources.
It is the Facilitator’s task to define the economic, legal and administrative feasibility of the project and to advise the project sponsor with regard to licences covering operational activity, town planning, storage and spreading digested products. The Facilitator is also involved in presenting investment help, assistance from the Agricultural Investment Fund (FIA), subsidies from Energy Renewal for Public Sector and Associated Buildings (UREBA) and the Directorate for Sports Infrastructure (Infrasport), in addition to calculating the number of green certificates for the project under consideration.
